Michelle Obama Talks About IVF and Miscarriage

Michelle Obama Talks About IVF and Miscarriage

Do you ever wonder what it feels like to not be able to have a child? We assume that this is a natural process of the womans body but many women find it difficult to conceive naturally every day. Some women have the ability to conceive but are unable to carry a baby to full term. Sadly, miscarriages are a very common occurrence. According to miscarriage statistics, sources vary but many estimate that approximately 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage, and some estimates are as high as 1 in 3. When you think of what the role of a woman is you tend to correlate it with homemaker, mother, wife, caregiver and child bearer.  Mind you these are all worthy titles to live up to but sometimes unattainable. In many cultures, if a woman cannot conceive she is looked down upon, shamed in her community and made to feel inferior, as if having a child is her only identity.

Detect Breast Cancer, by Ultrasound or Mammogram?

Detect Breast Cancer, by Ultrasound or Mammogram?

If you have ever had a mammogram, it could be one of the most difficult examinations a woman will have to experience in her life.  In this day and era, it is crucial that women are tested for breast cancer. I know someone who has either had breast cancer or died from breast cancer. Regrettably, I didn't believe breast cancer would affect my life until my aunt passed away a few years ago.  She was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and had undergone chemotherapy to combat the illness. I was under the impression if you contracted breast cancer early you had a better chance at survival, but my aunt was defeated by this horrible disease and our family was devastated. We were taken by surprise how quickly cancer had spread to other parts of her body. It was one of the worse days of my life.  I was forced to look at breast cancer in an entirely different way.

3 Reasons Why NOT to Pump Near a Toilet

3 Reasons Why NOT to Pump Near a Toilet

Nursing rooms have been around for quite some time now. And companies like Moms Pump Here are working to create options for moms on the go who need to pump or nurse their babies. But we've seen our share of locations submitted to our locator that include a bathroom or toilet. We keep them listed so moms can rate and share their review of the locations. Do we agree with bathrooms as a place to pump. NOPE. So they are listed for your knowledge.

LGBTQ Families Invest in Breast Milk & Breastfeeding

LGBTQ Families Invest in Breast Milk & Breastfeeding

Having a newborn is never easy, the joy of a new member of your team can easily be overwhelmed by the stress of making sure your little one is getting every advantage in his or her early years. This stress is amplified in parents who don’t subscribe to the traditional nuclear family; it’s important to remember however that even if your family structure is more “modern”, there’s nothing “traditional” about proper nutrition. When I was still in the hospital setting, I saw first-hand the plight of parents who did not have access to breast milk, it directly lead to the creation of BBy.

4 Spectacular Reasons Breasts are Magical

4 Spectacular Reasons Breasts are Magical

I believe breasts are magical! Not just because they’re incredibly beautiful, but because they are incredible and miraculous! These four facts ensure you never doubt the power of your breasts again.

1.     To produce breast milk, we literally dissolve parts of ourselves

We melt our own body fat starting with gluteal-femoral fat (aka our butts) and turn it into liquid to feed our babies.

2.     Your baby tells your breast what kind of milk it prefers, and your breast listens!

The nutritional and immunological components of breast milk change every day, according to the specific, individual needs of your baby. Your baby might lack the words to tell you what she needs, but breastfeeding makes it possible for you to receive her messages. During breastfeeding, her saliva “back washes” into your breast, providing your body with all the information it needs to make the best milk for your baby.

3.     Our breasts turn water into milk.

And not just any milk- SUPER MILK. Mature milk has 3 to 5 percent fat (depending on whether the baby is a boy or a girl- that’s right, your breasts can tell your baby’s gender!). The milk holds an impressive list of minerals and vitamins: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and vitamins A, C, and E. Long chain fatty acids like DHA (an omega-3) and AA (an omega-6) are also present in breast milk, which is critical to maintain and develop the brain and nervous-system.

4.     They’re beautiful in all their different shapes, sizes, and styles.

Your breasts have this incredible ability to help sustain and nurture life, with the purest most unaltered substance, and how they look has no effect on this astonishing ability. So, whether they’re “uneven” or perky or saggy or big or small, they’re all miracle workers. And that’s the most beautiful thing they can be. And this should be celebrated.

Introduction of solid food to your infant or toddler can be a stressful time in any parent’s life. A child that had been exclusively breast or bottle fed up until that point may not understand the new source of nutrition as it is not innate and toddlers who may have been exposed to sweeter foods may find the vegetables not to their liking. However, there are a few surefire ways to get your child on the right track and save you a ton of headaches!

Why Black Moms Fear For Their Lives

Why Black Moms Fear For Their Lives

I have given birth three times in the past four years, each time in a different hospital with a very different experience. A year or so after my first child was born a friend sent me an NPR feature on traumatic child birth in the US, and I wasn’t surprised to see the hospital where I had my first featured in it. I discovered that those on Medicaid (like I was), but most especially black and brown women had received lackluster to terrible care in that hospital. Still trying to understand why I had been treated the way I was there, I started to look a little deeper into the issues pregnant women face in the US today.
